Don’t Stop Because of Detours!

Live dream

Firing up a new post after more than two tears seems like either starting over or catching up after moving. But either way, it has been a ride. For those who have read regularly, I still hike, and just finished a 21 day fast. However, since January 2016, I completed a national exam to begin the process of becoming a licensed professional counselor, re-enrolled in a doctoral program, my son has graduated high school, have been on two cruises (I was always terrified and thought surely I would die), and on September 27th I will gladly send in my application to become fully licensed as a professional counselor. It has been a dream for many years. More years than I care mention, but it only matters that I stayed with it.

Dreams and visions are wonderful things. They allow us to consider what can be and often push us to do things we might not do otherwise. At the same time, they can be scary. In 2006, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the first elected female head of state in Africa by being the 24th President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. But it did not happen overnight, she worked many years in multiple administrations in differing positions before ever becoming president. During her presidency, Johnson Sirleaf, she was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Tawakkol Karman of Yemen. The three women were recognized “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.”

Goal Obstacle Course

The road to achieving a goal is rarely linear, it is rather dynamic. It is not unlike a drive on the highway. If you know me, you know in my past I have never shied away from a near cross country drive. Now, I drive the interstate highways almost daily. Recently, I was on my way to the home of a client following trust GPS. When I exited all was well, rolling on a state route, then, orange signs, barrels, and construction popped up. The area was completely foreign to me so when the GPS decided to slowly “Reroute” I felt lost. Following the “detour” signs I took a right, kept driving, and hoped the GPS would catch up. Meanwhile, I pulled into a parking lot, grabbed the phone, and made the map bigger do I could see what was around me. I saw I could take the road along the store to a dead end, turn left, and it would drop me back where the original road would have taken me. So, I did just that ending up at the destination.

I said all that to say, the journey to licensure has been much less linear than I expected, I have learned how to pull off the road as needed, take the detours as they come, take action while waiting, and return to the planned destination. My first thought of being a  counselor as a profession was in 1997, I was majoring in psychology and urban studies at Kent State University, and after graduation I was terrified to take the GRE so I didn’t. But, I had this vision that never left. Graduated, worked as a social worker, became a Mom, moved to GA, moved back to OH and started graduate school 10 years after completing undergrad. Four years later I was in Killeen, Texas, completed graduate school and now four years later I am achieving licensure. Licensure is only the beginning of it, the vision is bigger than a piece of paper, but the paper was needed. The vision has been years in coming, it has taken purging, fire, purification, tears and anxiety, pruning, and being in the right place bringing who I am with me. Just as I am.

such a time

Where my office will be is perfect for me. I never thought that I would find such a place. That is nothing short of serendipity playing a part in bringing the puzzle pieces together for the mission to continue. Everyone has a mission that is for an appointed time, the key is to keep going through the detours to see it emerge. I just figure I was made for such a time as this no earlier.

I will continue to share my journey into private practice (pictures fromt he office coming soon), the significance of holistic health, cooking (of course), and the enjoyment of living the life you dream!
